“Pie!” the kids screeched and ran down the

stairs, the big black dog right on their heels. The only one who stayed behind was Kamapu. I gazed at his sleepy face as he nestled into my shoulder.

“It’s such hard work having fun,” Kimo said,

stroking Kamapu’s little head. I knew he was sending him to dreamland.

Out on the landing, Mama Nui found us. Her face twisted with emotion.

“Do you mind if I hold him?” she asked.

I handed him over to her, Kamapu sleeping peacefully. She smiled. She’d made the personal mistake of letting the kahuna remove Kimo from her when he was very young for the greater good of mankind. It was a decision that had hurt

her…no, haunted her for years. When I first met him, Kimo told me his parents were dead. It was a shock when I discovered they weren’t. Now we

were close to them and I knew Kamapu was her special favorite. I think because she felt having him was like having Kimo back as a toddler again.

She and Papa Nui loved all the children and were besotted with each and every one of them, but the baby twins meant Mama Nui and Tutu didn’t fight so much anymore over who got to hold a baby.

They were fantastic grandmas and I thanked God and Goddess Pele each and every day that our children had so many wonderful adults in their lives who adored them.
